The Coalition

Our Vision:

“All who call Hawai‘i home have the confidence, ability, and pathways to thrive in a digital world.”

The Digital Divide and Path to Digital Equity

In today's landscape, remote work, online education, telehealth, and virtual interactions are vital, yet many in Hawaiʻi face hurdles in accessing high-quality Internet, essential tools, and digital literacy skills. Digital inequality impacts various sectors – economy, education, healthcare, essential services, familial care, and civic engagement. Affordable high-speed Internet, connected devices, digital literacy training, and community support programs empower residents, fostering a more equitable and prosperous future.

Bridging the Divide:
Hawaiʻi’s Commitment

Since the inception of the Hawaiʻi Broadband Task Force in 2007, the state has actively addressed the digital divide. When the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated existing inequities, grassroots initiatives like the Hawaiʻi Broadband Hui (BBHui) and Digital Equity Declaration in 2020, emerged from community-government partnerships to combat digital disparities.

Maui Nui Digital Equity Coalition
(MNDEC)

The County of Maui’s establishment of Maui Nui Digital Equity Coalition (MNDEC), unites partners across Maui Nui to bridge the digital gap and achieve equity. MNDEC aims to create community-based plans ensuring digital equity for all, regardless of socio-economic factors. The goals include creating a network of committed partners, supporting funding requests, and aiming for national recognition as a digital leader.

MNDEC will be comprised of three chapters, focusing on Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi's unique populations, geographies, and needs. Each chapter navigates towards a digitally equitable future tailored to its respective community.
